First Release:	Build 2140, 21 March 2002.
Second Release:	Build 2142, 26 April 2002.
Third Release:	Build 2143, 24 May 2002.
Reference ID:	Readme KeySoft 306 Build 2143.

Welcome to the release of KeySoft version 3.06 for the BrailleNote and VoiceNote family of products. This version is identified as: KeySoft C E version 3.06, build 2143.

This release primarily addresses a potential problem with file corruption that is indicated by error messages such as "out of memory" or "exception converter, data misalignment" or "exception converter, error writing to ...". The opportunity has also been taken to correct 4 other minor problems reported with the previous 3.06 releases. These being; scrambling of some longer help messages, correction of the One Handed mode help message in the QT products, not being able to edit an e-mail address field on VoiceNote QT and BrailleNote QT models, and display of the incorrect Braille grade following insertion of a calculation. Refer to sections 4.12 through 4.16. Apart from these additions, allowances for those updating from previous 3.06 builds, and changing of references from build 2142 to 2143, no other major changes have been made to the Read Me file.

For a summary of additional items addressed in this release since the 3.05 Beta 12 release of 20 December 2001, please refer to Section 4 of this Read Me.

The intention of this software release is to allow interested users to upgrade to the current shipping release of the KeySoft software. The 3.06 release addresses reported issues with the software and also includes product enhancements. While every effort has been made to ensure that the KeySoft 3.06 software release is fundamentally sound, no guarantee of performance is given or implied.

Before proceeding with your upgrade we recommend you follow good practice and back up the contents of your Flash Disk.

IMPORTANT NOTE CONCERNING BRAILLENOTE/VOICENOTE E-MAIL SYSTEM.

The following paragraph does not apply if you are already running KeySoft version 3.051 beta 12, or earlier builds of the KeySoft 3.06 release.

The first time you run the new e-mail software will cause a delay while the e-mail database is re-sorted. The machine will indicate "Please Wait", but will then go silent until the database re-sort is completed. It is important NOT to Reset the machine during this time. The time taken to re-sort the database will depend on the number of e-mails in your e-mail folders.

4.	Updates to Read Me.

Provides a summary of additional changes made to the software since the 3.051 beta 12 release of 20 December 2001. This is intended to provide a quick reference for people who are already familiar with the contents of the 3.051 beta 12 Read Me.

1.	BACKGROUND.

The current shipping version of all BrailleNote and VoiceNote products is version 3.06 build 2143.

Prior to the 3.06 release, the shipping version of the BrailleNote software was Version 3.03, build 1795. VoiceNote's shipped with Version 3.04, build 1814, and the BrailleNote QT with Version 3.05, build 1957.

The 3.06 build 2143 release may be installed in all BrailleNote and VoiceNote models irrespective of the version of Factory, or subsequent upgrade, software. It also provides support for the optional GPS package.

For earlier BrailleNote's, the install program will automatically determine if the Factory installed software is KeySoft version 3.00 (US market), or version 3.01 (All other markets). In this instance the installer will install additional files, and place the Read me for 3.03 in the General folder.

2.	INSTALLATION OF VERSION 3.06.

In the following instructions, references to BrailleNote also apply to installing the software on a VoiceNote.

Only one installation is required to install the Version 3.06 release. The installation may be made using the Super-Disk drive or by using ActiveSync.

The 3.06 release is distributed as a self-extracting installation program, named "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe". When installing from the Super Disk drive, this is the only file required. The installation program automatically installs files associated with the upgrade to the appropriate folders on the BrailleNote. If installing from the Super Disk drive, copy the "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" install file onto a floppy disk.

For installation using ActiveSync, a companion file "ActiveSync Install.exe" must be located in the same folder as the main installation program "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe". For example, create a folder named "KeySoft306" on your hard drive and copy the two files "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" and "ActiveSync Install.exe" into the folder.

The files associated with the 3.06 release are installed on the Flash Disk, which is the disk used for storage of User files. The amount of free space needed on the Flash Disk depends on whether or not you currently have an upgrade installed on the Flash Disk.

The current software version running on your machine is given by going the Main Menu, and selecting the "Information" item. Press "SPACE" to read the software version. The version of software burnt into the Main Flash at the Factory may be determined by pressing Reset with dots 1-2-3 held down. Continue to hold the keys down until the BrailleNote/VoiceNote starts to speak. Again, go to the "Information" item on the Main Menu to determine the Factory software version installed in your machine. For a BrailleNote QT or VoiceNote Qwerty, hold down the F-D-S keys while pressing Reset.

The following scenarios, together with the free space needed to install the 3.06 release, may apply. The term "Factory Software" refers to the version determined after a Reset with dots 1-2-3. The term "Upgrade Software" refers to any upgrade that has subsequently been installed in the Flash Disk. This is the software that will run after pressing Reset on its own.

Factory Software: 3.06 build 2142 for all models.
Current Upgrade Software: None.
Free Space required: 1.3 MB.

Factory Software: 3.03 for BrailleNote's, 3.04 for VoiceNote's, or 3.05 for BrailleNote QT's.
Current Upgrade Software: None.
Free Space required: 1.3 MB.

Factory Software: 3.00 or 3.01 for BrailleNote's.
Current Upgrade Software: 3.03, or 3.05 Beta 12.
Free Space required: 0.3 MB.

Factory Software: 3.00 or 3.01 for BrailleNote's.
Current Upgrade Software: None
Free Space required: 1.3 MB.

You can check the amount of free space by going to the "Directory" option in the File Manager menu. Press "SPACE" to select the "Flash Disk" and then press "SPACE with I" to display the amount of free memory and the total size of the Flash disk. If the free space is less than that indicated above for your particular situation, you will need to do some housekeeping before installing the upgrade. The "disk space" command for Qwerty keyboard models is READ with I.

If you experience problems while installing the upgrade, refer to Section 2.3 "Installation Problems" for a possible solution.

2.1.	Using the Super-Disk.

a. Before you start the installation process, switch on your BrailleNote and make sure that the speech is turned on. Press the Reset switch with dots 1-2-3, held down and continue to hold them down until the BrailleNote starts to speak. For a BrailleNote QT or a VoiceNote Qwerty, hold down the F-D-S keys while pressing Reset.

If you already have an upgrade to KeySoft running from the Flash Disk, you may notice that your user settings temporarily return to the factory default settings after performing the Reset with dots 1-2-3. Providing you follow the upgrade procedure, and press Reset when requested, the system should revert to your normal user settings.

b. Place the upgrade disk in the Super-Disk drive, select "Application Program" on the Utilities menu, and at the prompt: "Run Program from Drive?", press "SPACE" repeatedly to select the Storage Card, then press "ENTER".

Follow the instruction given for the reset message. If you asked to do the Reset with dots 4-5-6 you will have to reset the time and date, and you will then be advised to Reset the machine again. This second reset should be done with no keys held down. Please note that if you have files stored on the KeySoft System Disk, these will be deleted if you perform a Reset with dots 4-5-6 held down.

2.2.	Using ActiveSync.

a. Before you start the installation process, switch on your BrailleNote and make sure that the speech is turned on. Press the Reset switch with dots 1-2-3 held down and continue to hold them down until the BrailleNote starts to speak. For a BrailleNote QT or VoiceNote Qwerty, hold down the F-D-S keys while pressing Reset.

If you already have an upgrade to KeySoft running from the Flash Disk, you may notice that your user settings temporarily return to the factory default settings after performing the Reset with dots 1-2-3. Providing you follow the upgrade procedure, and press Reset when requested, the system should revert to your normal user settings.

b. Establish an ActiveSync connection between your PC and the BrailleNote.

c. Using Windows Explorer, open the Folder in which you copied the files "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" and ActiveSync Install.exe". Select the file "ActiveSync Install.exe", and press ENTER on your PC keyboard.

d. You should immediately get the "PDI KeySoft ActiveSync Installer" dialog box appearing on your PC. Press ENTER to start the installation.

e. The install program will establish a connection to the BrailleNote and transfer the Installation program to the BrailleNote.

f. Depending on your screen reader you may get progress messages during this transfer. The transfer should take about 90 seconds and when complete the BrailleNote will announce "Welcome to KeySoft Version 3.06 build 2143 installation, to start the installation press ENTER, to cancel press SPACE with E".

g. Press the ENTER key on the BrailleNote to start the installation.

h. The BrailleNote will beep for about 5 to 10 seconds while the upgrade is being installed. At the completion the BrailleNote will announce: "KeySoft 3.06 build 2143 installation complete, the ActiveSync installation program will give the next instruction. To continue press ENTER".

i. Press ENTER on the BrailleNote. A dialog box on the PC should then advise that the installation is complete, and that BrailleNote should be restarted by pressing Reset. Press ENTER on the PC to acknowledge this dialog box and close the ActiveSync install program.

This second reset should be done with no keys held down. Please note that if you have files stored on the KeySoft System Disk, these will be deleted if you perform a Reset with dots 4-5-6 held down.

2.3	Installation Problems

The following notes may be useful if you experience problems during the upgrade process.

a.	When installing from a floppy disk only the file "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" is required.

b.	When installing from ActiveSync, both of the files "ActiveSync Install.exe" and "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" must be present. You must execute the file "ActiveSync Install.exe" when installing from ActiveSync.

c.	It is possible to install the upgrade from an ATA card, or IBM MicroDrive. If this is done, place the file "KeySoft 306 build 2143.exe" in the root directory of the ATA card.

d.	If after installing the upgrade you are unable to reset your machine, using just the reset switch with no keys held down, it is likely that files associated with the Windows folder on the Flash Disk have become corrupted. To start the machine, press Reset with dots 4-5-6 held down until the unit restarts. Reset the time and date. Connect the BrailleNote to your PC using ActiveSync and delete the Windows folder from the Flash Disk. Reset the unit using just the Reset switch. Re-install the upgrade.

3.	CHANGES.

This section details changes made since the release of KeySoft 3.03 software through to this 3.06 release. Because VoiceNote's have been shipping with 3.04 software, and BrailleNote QT's with 3.05 software, some of the reported enhancements and software fixes will already be incorporated in those releases.

Changes have been grouped under various headings, for example, changes relating to the e-mail system have been grouped under the heading "E-mail Related".

Product enhancements, such as faster opening of large documents, generally apply to all products in the BrailleNote family. Software fixes may in some instances apply to all products, but often only apply to specific models. In the descriptions that follow, no attempt has been made to categorize enhancements or software fixes against specific models.

Email Related.

3.1. First Time Use: Please note that the BrailleNote will announce "Please Wait" the first time you Read e-mail after installing the 3.06 release. This does not apply if you have previously installed the 3.051 beta 12 upgrade. Changes have been made to the e-mail sort algorithms and these take effect the first time you read e-mail. The BrailleNote wont make any sound while this sort process is in progress, and it is important not to Reset the machine during this period. The time taken to complete the sort will depend on the number of e-mails on the system. This only occurs the first time you access e-mail after installing the 3.06 release.

3.2. Free Database Space: An item, "Free database space", has been added to the "E-mail set-up menu".

This is to address the problem of the Keylist.cdb file continually
expanding in size, which can happen if people don't delete unwanted e-mails
on a regular basis. With the previous software, if you keep receiving
e-mails until you are out of memory, then delete unwanted e-mail, it isn't
possible to reclaim the space "freed-up" after deleting unwanted e-mail.
The "Free database space" software shrinks the database back to the
smallest size capable of storing the e-mails remaining in the database.

To use the utility, simply go to the e-mail set-up menu, and select the
item "Free database space". After running, the utility will report how
much space has been freed.

3.7. Moving or Copying E-mail: When moving or copying e-mail between folders or to the Trash, a beep sounds approximately once every 3 seconds to indicate the machine is busy. Do not reset the machine during this time. You can press ENTER to obtain a status update.

3.8. Exiting from long E-mail move/copy sequences: Pressing ESCAPE during e-mail move/copy sequences will cause the task to terminate after the completing the current move/copy.

3.9.	OutLook Express HTML Handler: E-mail that is sent from clients that include both Text and HTML format, will be decoded in Text format. This means that for OutLook Express, even if "Text" is not selected for sending e-mail, the BrailleNote/VoiceNote with decode the text version.

For example, the standard paragraph boundary in a Braille document is an indented or blank line. If paragraph boundaries are being strictly enforced, 2 blank lines in the Braille document would only cause one blank line in the text or printed document. If paragraph boundaries are being laxly enforced, the number of blank line in the Braille document would be duplicated in the text or printed document. The default setting may be set in the "Back Translation Options" list, and is normally set not to interpret larger paragraph boundaries as paragraphs. The "Back Translation Options" list may be accessed by first going to the "File Manager", selecting the "Translate File" option, and finally choosing the "Back Translation Options" item. The second item in this list determines how paragraph boundaries are interpreted.

4.	Updates to Read Me.

This section provides a summary of additional changes made to the software since the 3.051 beta 12 release of 20 December 2001. This is intended to provide a quick reference for people who are already familiar with the contents of the 3.051 beta 12 Read Me. The relevant items have been repeated from Section 3 above. The corresponding Section 3 reference is given following the header information. For example, "Free Database Space: (Section 3.2)".

There are 9 main changes/fixes since the 3.051 beta 12 release, as summarised in items 4.1 to 4.9 below. A further 7 changes relate to additional changes since the first release of 3.06 build 2140. These are summarised in items 4.10 to 4.16 below.

4.1. Free Database Space: (Section 3.2) An item, "Free database space", has been added to the "E-mail set-up menu".

4.2. No Subject/Anonymous: (Section 3.21) Dependent on e-mail size, it was possible to receive messages with the subject listed as "no subject" and the from line listed as "anonymous." This has been fixed.

4.3. Error Alert Volume: (Section 3.23) The volume of the Error Alert tone can now be set from the Review Voice item on the Options menu. The value can be set between 0 and 6, 6 being the loudest, and 0 disabling the tone. The default value being 4.

4.4. GPS Support: (Section 3.26) KeySoft 3.06 includes support for the optional GPS package.

4.5. Blank File Content: (Section 3.29) A small number of people reported that the content of a specific file was found to be "blank" when reopening the file after installing version 3.051 beta 12. This problem has been fixed.

4.6. File Content Issue: (Section 3.37) The situation where speech could continually loop on a particular "word" that was a mixture of letters, punctuation and numbers, has been corrected. The remote possibility of receiving "data misalignment" errors, followed by an exception error, while reading particular documents, has been addressed.

4.7. Planner Printing: (Section 3.55) For BrailleNote, printout of the planner, spanning multiple days, now functions correctly.

4.8.	Serial Port File Transfer: (Section 3.64) Serial file import/export was "broken" in version 3.05 Beta 12 and has now been fixed.

4.9. Entering Hibernate Mode while Embossing or Printing: (Section 3.77) BrailleNote/VoiceNote no longer enters Hibernate while embossing or printing a lengthy file.

4.10. Default Date: (New to build 2142) If the clock needs setting as a result of the batteries going completely flat, or as the result of a Reset with dots 4-5-6 (Qwerty models j-k-l), the default start date is now 1 January 2002.

4.11. Database Opening: (New to build 2142) In version 3.06 build 2140, it was not possible to open customised databases where all field entries had been filled in.

4.12. File and Planner Corruption: (New to build 2143) Both of the previous 3.06 builds have the potential to cause file corruption in the Word Processor and Planner. This is indicated by error messages such as "out of memory" or "exception converter, data misalignment" or "exception converter, error writing to ...".

4.13. Help Message Scrambling: (New to build 2143) The problem of some longer Help messages being scrambled has been corrected.

4.14. One-Handed Mode QT Models: (New to build 2143) The start up help message given to exit One-Handed mode for VoiceNote QT and BrailleNote QT models has been corrected.

4.15. Editing e-mail address fields: (New to build 2143) The problem of not being able to edit an e-mail address field on Qwerty keyboard units has been fixed. The CONTROL with 8 command now functions.

4.16.	Restoration of Braille display grade: (New to build 2143) The problem of the Braille display grade not being correctly restored to Grade 2 following insertion of a calculation into a word processor document has been corrected.
